Know “why” before you ask
One of the joys of presenting seminars is the opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds with a variety of experiences. I have found that by listening to their comments and questions, I am able to learn and grow. There is much wisdom to be shared with others.
“Why would you ask that question?” asked Tony Koch during the Interview Right to Hire Right seminar I presented during the 2002 convention of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA).
It is a good question, one that we should ask ourselves before beginning to interview candidates for any position. It is not enough to answer that “I was asked this question during my interview” or “I saw this question is a book about interviewing and thought it was a good one.”
Before asking any question, we must know how what is learned from the answer will be used to make a better hiring decision. How does the question relate to what is important to the company? Will the answer reflect values and behaviour that are key to success of others who have held positions similar to the one that is vacant?
During Nelson Scott’s Interview Right to Hire Right seminar, participants learn how to write and ask questions that will help interviewers obtain the information they need to make better hiring decisions.
