Staff Recognition & Retention

Planning for a year of recognition

The beginning of the New Year is a great time to identify opportunities during the coming months when it will be easy and natural to acknowledge staff for who they are and what they do. Here are some possibilities to get you started. Note them in your calendar or your electronic organizer:

  • Birthdays of co-workers and those you supervise — shows you care about them as people.
  • Employment anniversaries — a good time to highlight the staff member’s accomplishments of the last 12 months, without getting into the context of a performance appraisal.
  • Months, weeks or days set aside to promote and honour the staff members’ professions (e.g. Canadian Teacher Appreciation Week, Feb 13 - 19; Administrative Professionals Week, Apr 24 - 30; National Nursing Week, May 9 - 15).
  • National Boss Day (Oct 16) — everyone, even those in management, need to be recognized from time to time.
Marking these dates supplements, but does not substitute for, regular and frequent job-relation staff recognition. Every genuine gesture of appreciation adds to the message that the employee is valued.

During his Staff Recognition & Retention seminars, Nelson Scott emphasizes the value of genuine, timely, specific, personalized and relevant recognition in making the organization more successful, increasing commitment, improving morale and reducing turnover.
